How to get the look

The secret to getting your glow right for this look lies in the base makeup. After prepping your skin with a moisturiser, use a glow-boosting primer to get an even tone—preferably one that promises to give you a pearlescent finish. Top it up with a creamy foundation that’ll give you the radiant skin you desire. For the eyes, use a dull gold eyeshadow for your lids, tightline your upper and lower lash lines and apply multiple coats of mascara to your lashes as a finishing touch. Dab on some highlighter on the high points of your face and use a creamy brown lipstick for your pout. Keep your hair look simple by opting for a blowout.

Patani stepped out this weekend in a nude bodycon dress and went with makeup from the same colour family to complement it. Her beauty look comprised of light shimmery eyes and a glossy lip, complete with side-parted wavy hair.

How to get the look

For Patani’s look, start with a lightweight, dewy finish foundation for your face—mix it up with a moisturiser and apply it on your neck as well—to make sure your skin tone looks uniform. For your eyes, correct and conceal any dark circles and dust on some silver shimmer eyeshadow on your lids with a light touch. Then, coat your upper and lower lashes in mascara. Follow with a faint, matte pink blush for your cheeks and a shiny brown gloss for your lips to complete the look. Keep the hair simple by styling it in large, open waves with a side part.

How to get the look

For Kapoor’s makeup, start off with a matte foundation as your base; make sure you colour correct and conceal any blemishes beforehand, so that your skin looks even. Brush your brows so that the hair is all in place, and looks defined. For your eye makeup, apply light brown eyeshadow on your lids and pull it till just before your brow bone. Apply a matte beige shadow on your crease line to give your eyes some definition. Then, choose a cream coloured eyeshadow and apply it on your eyelid. Using a gel eyeliner for maximum impact, draw on a winged eyeliner in a line that thickens as it extends outwards. Take a small eyeshadow brush and blend a dark brown shadow on your lower lash line. Use a soft pink blush for your cheeks and a matte, coral nude for your lips to finish.

Our hormones have a lot to answer for, especially during pregnancy, when they can go into overdrive, leaving the skin either glowing or glum. 

“Rising progesterone levels combined with dipping oestrogen leads to an increased production of sebum, which congests the pores and causes breakouts,” says dermatologist Dr Mukta Sachdev of MS Skin Centre in Bengaluru.

SKINCARE CONCERNS DURING PREGNANCY
Apart of breakouts, you may develop patches of pigmentation, caused by a temporary increase in melanin, the substance that gives skin its colour.

“Melasama shows up on the forehead, cheekbones, upper lip and chin, hence the nickname ‘the mask of pregnancy’,” explains Dr Sachdev. 

“Existing moles and the areola around the nipples can darken too, and linea nigra—a dark stripe down the centre of the bump—is also common,” she says. 

If you were blessed with a pregnancy glow, your postnatal complexion can be quite the opposite. 

“Hormonal changes can strip skin of its natural oils, making it drier; lack of sleep can bring on dullness and dark circles; breastfeeding may leave skin dehydrated; and the dreaded stretch marks can become visible too,” Dr Sachdev adds.

SKINCARE RULES FOR PREGNANT AND BREASTFEEDING WOMEN
  • Keep skincare simple: During pregnancy and breastfeeding, keep your skincare regime simple with products that are non-medicated, and fragrance- and paraben-free. If breakouts are a problem, pick a gentle face wash or moisturiser containing anti-inflammatory niacinamide like Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream Moisturizer. Dry, flaky patches can be nourished with a rich, soothing moisturiser. We like Avène Rich Compensating Cream. “Moisturisers containing shea butter, avocado oil and Vitamin E can combat dryness, itching and stretch marks from a growing bump,” advises Dr Sachdev.
  • Fight pigmentation: Daily use of a sunscreen can stop pigmentation from developing or aggravating. “Most discolouration should fade about three months after birth. If it persists, a kojic acid cream in low concentration can be used post-breastfeeding,” says Dr Sachdev. “Alternatively, see a dermatologist who can prescribe a lightening agent.”
  • Post-pregnancy solutions: “After birth and breastfeeding, antibacterial creams with benzoyl peroxide or clindamycin are safe options for fighting flare-ups,” shares Dr Sachdev. Eye creams and serums formulated with Vitamins C and E can revive a sleep-deprived complexion, especially under the eye zone.
  • Eat well: Once the baby arrives, you may rely on coffee as fuel to keep you going, but too much of it will simply dehydrate skin further. A balanced diet and plenty of water are imperative for keeping skin healthy from within.

How Alia Bhatt got her bikini body?

“About one year ago, I was having an anxiety attack,” says actor Alia Bhatt, in her characteristically animated way. The urgency was real—“I had one month to look sexy in a bikini.” The same bikini she’s sporting on the beach with Shahid Kapoor in her new flick Shaandaar.

The pounds weren’t the problem. “I had lost a whopping amount of weight,” Bhatt says, but bikini-worthy curves were proving elusive. “I was beginning to look like a boy! Which, for obvious reasons, is not sexy at all!”

Enter pilates pro and trainer to the stars Yasmin Karachiwala. “I think it’s safe to say the first time I met Yas [Karachiwala], I was a bit scared,” recounts Bhatt, “You would be too if you had been there. Fluorescent clothes, sprinting away on the cross trainer wearing the ATS (Altitude Training Systems) machine, which kind of makes you look like a monster or robot.”

Function over form
As a first step, Karachiwala recommended curbing cardio for the petite star. “She’d already become too thin and cardio was just going to eat away at her.”

The key was to not simply focus on making Bhatt look good in a two-piece but to teach her to move better and function better. “I realized that Alia was very unaware of the way her body should move,” says Karachiwala, “She was sloppy. She’s double-jointed and has a lot happening in her body. I needed to teach her how to take charge and control her movements. Over the last year, that’s what I’ve done. More than shaping her body to look as good as she’s looking right now, internally we’ve worked a lot on her posture, the way she walks and the way she holds herself.”

Bhatt is quick to acknowledge the improvement and changes she’s seen in herself. “From not being able to stand straight with my two feet on the ground, she now has me doing squats on the flat side of the BOSU ball.”

Getting rid of routine
“Every time she comes into the studio, we do a new machine, a new method of training,” says Karachiwala, “She never repeats a workout ever.” The trainer takes Bhatt through seven different pilates machines in any given week—the Reformer, the Cadillac, the Core Align (Bhatt’s favourite machine), Wunda Chair, Motor, Step Barrel, Bodhi and the Barre. There are hundreds of exercises you can do on each machine,” she explains, “That’s why [Bhatt’s] never bored!”

Combination training
Karachiwala changes Bhatt’s exercise regime based on her current fitness level. “We do a lot of pilates because her body reacts beautifully,” Karachiwala says, “But when she puts on weight, we do a better combination of functional training and pilates. When she’s lost weight, like right now, I just stick to pilates.”

Clearly Bhatt’s enjoying it. “Even though I had been working out before I met her, the gym was always a burden for me. A place I had to push myself to go to. But here, it’s the other way around. I have to push myself to not go to the gym sometimes.” Karachiwala corroborates, “If Alia’s not shooting, she’s in the gym six days a week. She’d like to come seven but I tell her to rest one day and take it easy.”
